Edward Teach, nicknamed Blackbeard, was an English pirate who gathered his treasure by attacking ships along the American east coast and the Caribbean sea. He had a business arrangement with Carolina govenor, Charles Eden, who allowed him to have a base on the north coast of the State. He forced ships sailing the Pamlico Sound to pay for their safe passage and shared his ill gotten gains with the Govenor. His ship, taken by force from the French was called “Queen Anne’s Revenge”.
The planters, tired of his extortion, made representation to Virginia Govenor Spottswood. He sent the British navy who caught and killed Blackbeard. They cut off his head and mounted it on the sprit at the bow of his own ship. The story of Blackbeard’s buried treasure lives on and entices treasure hunter’s to search for it. It’s probably just a legend – a good pirate would have spent it all on wine, women and song!
